Small Amount Taken An attempt to blow the safe of the JefTerson Mercantile Company sometime some-time Tuesday night proved a failure, when the fuse attached to three sticks of dynamite packed in a bucket of mud, failed to ignite the explosives. On opening the store Wednesday morning, the dynamite, with its partly part-ly burned fuse was found. The safe was covered with rugs taken from f the stock, with which to deaden the explosion. From all appearances of the job, it was perpetrated by an amateur. Entrance was gained by prying off an iron grating on a window in the ) ifoar of the store. The explosives were secured in the store and taken to the engine room where it was mixed mix-ed with mud in a bucket, taken to the office and placed beneath the safe. After lighting the fuse the party or parties made an exit through a side door to await results. Wheather they were frightened away is not known. However, the fuse refused to burn and the explosion did not take place. A 30-30 rifle and a quantity of shells for the gun were taken from the store, but as far as could be learned the following (morning, no other goods were stolen. Something like forty dollars had been left in the cash register in the store overnight, but the robbers evidently had not even looked into these cash recept-ables. recept-ables. While no tangible clues were left, officers are working on the case. |
