Show v THE TREND IS CONSOLIDATION. Whether one likes it or not, it must be plainly evident evi-dent to all that consolidation is the order of the day in America. Various makes of automobiles are manufactured manu-factured by the one coloration, formed by the gradual combine of several single companies. Small towns are seeing the consolidation of newspapers, forming one strong periodical instead of two or more struggling weak-voiced sheets. Groups of small colleges are being merged under one control. Large railroad companies absorb smaller lines. At first thought, ad this consolidation would seem to bring about loss of specialization. But this is the age of specialization, and the vast process of combining and merging is to allow for greater specialization. There is no loss in that respect, but the decline of single-handed pioneer effort brings the same sad feeling as did the replacement re-placement of the proud, painstaking and artistic craftsman crafts-man by machine efforts. |
