Show SHEEP LOSSES CAUSE RIDDLE The old question if a man's house is assessed as of January 1 and burns down in February should he be required re-quired to pay taxes on it next November? No-vember? bobs up in another but not unprecedented form in a letter from R. N. Day of the Millard county assessor's as-sessor's .office to the state tax commission. com-mission. The law requires the assessment assess-ment of property as of January 1. The motorist usually pays taxes on his car in February, but if it is demolished de-molished by an accident in March his application for a refund would probably prob-ably not be entertained by the county coun-ty board of equalization. Mr. Day writes: "Practically every herd of sheep that was counted on the desert last January has had an unusually large loss on account of the severe weather and poor feed conditions. We have letters from numerous sheepmen asking for adjustments ad-justments on this account. In answering1 an-swering1 then'!, we have told ttijem that, inasmuch as all of the sheepmen were in the same position and had all suffered severe losses, we intended intend-ed to take the matter up as a unit, and, if any adjustment was made, we thought it only fair to make it apply to everyone. "We want to know your stand on this question, and we will appreciate you writing the board of equalization of this county and of Beaver and Juab counties also, giving your recommendations re-commendations on handling this question as a whole." |
