Show o SPANISH WAR VETS ENTITLED TO BACK PAY SAYS OUTZEN Spanish-American War veterans of this city who served in United States volunteer regiments numbered from 26 to 49 and the 11th U. S. Cavalry, under the act of March 2, 1899, will be pleased to learn that they are still entitled to receive extra pay that was authorized by Congress in 1899 but has never been claimed. Any veteran who served in the above named regiments is urged to communicate with Commander LaMar Outzen of Escalante Post No. 1546 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U. S., who is in receipt of details and particulars in reference to this extra pay and is prepared to assist in filing such claims. "In the interests of the thousands of Spanish-American War veterans who help make up out membership," explains Commander LaMar Outzen, "our organization recently investigated investigat-ed the possibility of securing this extra ex-tra pay which was duly authorized by Congress more than thirty years ago. More than 36,000 veterans were original! orig-inal! eligible to receive this Spanish-American Spanish-American War bonus. Congress granted one month's extra pay for service within the limits of the United Unit-ed States and two months' extra pay for those whose sendee was spent in the Philippines or beyond the territorial ter-ritorial limits of this country. "Because of legislation enacted in 1911 affecting claims of volunteer soldiers of the Army of the United States, the impression was created that these 36,000 veterans were no longer eligible to make application for this extra pay," continued Commander Command-er LaMar Outzen. "As a result near-j near-j ly a million dollars, set aside for this purpose by Congress, has laid dormant dor-mant all these years. "Since National Headquarters of the V. F. W. discovered this money is still available, approximately $50,-' $50,-' 000.00 has been paid by the govern- ment to Spanish-American War veterans vet-erans urine the past few weeks. Virtually Vir-tually all of these veterans still surviving sur-viving are entiled to two months' ex-! ex-! tra pay, or an average of approxim-' approxim-' ately $34.00 each. I "The Veterans of Foreign Wars of I the U. S. is composed of all over-seas veterans of all wars and as a result our organization is vitally interested in the welfare of those who served in the war with Spain, as well as those who fought with the A. E. F. in France or in Xicarasua and China I since the world war came to a close.'' |
