From the making of the beasts, the insects and the reptiles he had a few scraps left over, too vile and unfit for even the skunk, the hyena, the scorpion or the snake. So he took these unusable un-usable left-overs, mixed the whole well with jealousy, covered it with malice, implanted hate in jts being, gave it a chicken liver, marked the thing with a yellow streak and named it THE KNOCKER. But the job was too well done, and he spent the sixth day counteracting it, for he took the sunbeam of hope and put it in the heart of the child, and bid the child grow into the state of man; and made man yearn for community life, and of certain men he took a choiced picked few and filled them with civic pride, and enthused them with constructive leadership. And he bade them walk a little ahead of other men, but cautioned them not to walk too far ahead under pain of being misunderstood misunder-stood by their generation. And he gave them lots of work to do, thereby granting the boon of happiness. And to all other men he gave the right to choose their associates. as-sociates. And the sixth sun sank on the close of a perfect day. |
