Show MOST DISCOURAGING. One of the most discouraging sights to farmers around Fillmore Is the reservoir country, some six or seven miles north of the city. Illg patches of grain have been entirely destroyed by squirrel and rabbits, and even patches of alfalfo have been kept down by these pests that It has the appearance appear-ance of being pastured wiih xhcep. L. W. Calsiii'd, who bad some 40 acres of grain in has lost his entire crop; Peter lleauregard will get no grain and little hay; the Starley boys have already lost two patches of grain, another of alfalfa, and the balace of their crops will hardly be one-third Its usual amount; Charley Lambert, who has continually fought these pesis with poison since early spring on his plttre lias little to show for his hard work, and we are Informed he was coniK!!ud to cut his grain for hay to save It from the squirrels and rabbits. Other places down there v.e failed to visit last Friday, but we understand they are little better nfT than those we have mentioned. Reports from the old fields and the sink ure, "The squirrels squir-rels are raising the devil with ns," and the same cry comes from llolden, Meadow, Kentish and other places. Those In the foothills have not been troubled very much thus far, but Its only a matter of time before these lit- j tie pests w ill work their way up there. Thoughtful people are very much alarmed over the squirrel question, and are convinced that If a united ef- fort is not made to get rid of them. It will be only a matter of time before they will take most everything In H sight. (( The Chronicle will be pleased to publish any article on this subject and bel'cvrs that n reasonable bounty and a united effort would benefit the V whole country. il |
