Show SCHOOL CONSOLIDATION. We hope the county commissioners commission-ers at their next week's meeting will carry out the wishes of the great majority ma-jority of the people by consolidating the school districts of the county. The only opposition comes from a few people in a few districts who fear that taxes will be raised, and they are better bet-ter able to pay a slightly Increased tax. ir thla ahould result, than any of the other districts. If the commissioners commis-sioners wait tfTl everyone Is In favor of It we will never have consolidation. In every county where consolidation has been effected the great majority of those who have opposed It before have been converted to supporters after a trial. In a letter to Principal Woodward It. V. Larson, Superintendent of Cache County where consolidation was effected In 1907, says "Consolidation Is above all a more economical system than the one l displaced. It is more businesslike and lends Itself to modern business methods. The finances of the county have been handled connervatlvely. The moneys are handled by the banks giving us the best returns. Our bills lor supplies are always let to the lowest low-est bidders. Our tax levy last year was maintenance, i mills; building, mills ; Interest and sinking funds," 2V4 mills; the county levy for payment pay-ment of teachers was 1 3-4 mills. We have a uniform term of school. We aim to bring tbe poorest school up .0 the standard of the best. Nothing but fitness Is considered In appointing appoint-ing teachers. Tbe smaller districts have as strong a corps of teachers as the larger ones. A1..1 tousoldlatlon-iMs tousoldlatlon-iMs are always fearful that the towns represented on the school board will be favored to the Injury of those not so represented. This has proved to be a needless apprehension. The present pres-ent board was elected by the antl-cenaolidationists. antl-cenaolidationists. After working under un-der the system a short time they became be-came strongly In favor of It, and have since been elected by a unanimous vote of the people." We think these are pretty strong arguments, in Millard County the school term runs from six to seven and a half months, it Is quite impossible im-possible for the pupils to complete a nine months' course of all the required requir-ed studies In that time. The result Is that some studies are neglected, or pupils are advauced a grade before they have completed the lower one. We think this Is one reason why there are so many poor readers, writers and spellers among those who complete the eighth grade. Not suffluwut time is given to have thorn thoroughly drilled drill-ed 1n each grade as they pass through them. Under consolidation there could be nine months of school. Anojher advantage would be that uniform salaries would be psld the teschers and they would be retained longer. It is a bad thing to be changing chang-ing teachers every year or two. One of the districts oplosed to conol!da tlon has had three principals the past school yesr. Tbey could not possibly bo worse off In this resect under consolidation. con-solidation. We would like to hesr this question debated. If there are any opponent or t-onolidation willing to get up and ugue against consolidation we ra Ind plenty of persons ready to defend It at any time and place, Ia1 us br-n from ttte opponents. |
