Show Painted in Seventy-Two Hours. There is a picture in this year's show; at the Royal academy which has t singular history. It was painted by an artist who is now a captain on active ac-tive service, but the picture is not the one which he showed to his friends-at friends-at this year's contribution. The original, was of a sunset over a plowed Held, a fine landscape in a style which has distinguished dis-tinguished the artist. Five months ago. the painter wTas home on leave, aod he spent it working over his picture. Today To-day the canvas shows the plowed field and the sunset ; but it also shows sir. soldiers fallen about a cannon, into-the into-the breech of which one survivor Is placing the last shell. It is a fine picture, pic-ture, and by no means a pot-boiler.. The captain witnessed the incident he' depicts. The fortunate thing was thai the landscape was ready for the figure for no academy picture could br. painted during 72 hours' leave. It is easier for a man to be the architect archi-tect of his own fortune than to b the builder. Vices are among the oldest things on record, yet history doesn't mentloa the loss of a single one.
