A hiast in ihe Shut tuck nil up In Arizonu, set for the purpose uf brinje-iug brinje-iug down ore, whs responsible for the discovery of a remarkable cavern, now known as Shattuck cave, which lias yielded unusual mineral specimens, some of the finest of which have recently re-cently been added to the collection at the Michigan Collepe of Mines. When the miner who had been working in that port of the iWO-foot level returned with the nifiht shift he found a vvni opening that readier farther than his light could penetrate. Looking upward, up-ward, he could see tiny lights Hashing, and, in the belief That they were stais, he ran back to thv shaft and declared (hat he had blasted a hole clear through to the surface. On investigating, investi-gating, the mine official found that (he blast had opened a great circular cavern cav-ern 'S-Z feet in diameter and 175 feet high, which seemed like a piece of fairyland. On the roof myriads of crystals crys-tals reflected the lights of the miners' lamps. The walls, the roof, and file floor were covered with great clusters of crystals, and near the center of the cavern a mass of .stalactites, 40 feel long, hung from the ceiling like a great chandelier. For the most part ihe crystals were pure white, hut, in places where the filtering waters had contained iron and copper, great transparent trans-parent stalactites and stalagmites, some ruby-red. others a clear emerald green or azure blue, added to the beauty beau-ty of the scene.' |
