Show HOW TO PREPARE SEED BED Harrow Is Most Universally Used Tillage Implement Excellent for Pulverizing Soil. Tbe harrow Is the most universally used surface tillage Implement It Is used, says an Ohio bulletin, to follow the plow when It is desired to pulverize pulver-ize tbe aoll Immediately, and scarcely a crop Is grown where the harrow la not used In preparing Its seed bed. Tbe use of the harrow levels and pul vertxea tbe topmost soil, and creates an excellent esrth mulch for preventing prevent-ing the loss of soil moisture. W'ltb timely use It destroys a countless count-less number of very small weeds. It is not a cultivator, however; and. when used for destroying weeds. It ahould be used when the weeds are very small, and at a time when the strong sunlight will quickly destroy the small, upturned roots. When preparing the seed bed for cultlvsted crops it la wise to disk and barrow alternately several times before the crop la planted. This helps very much In warming the soli; and a great many weeds are destroyed that would bare grown with the cultivated cultivat-ed crop. Both grain and cultivated crops are sometimes harrowed to loosen a crusted condition of the surface soil. and to destroy small weeds Mow. ever, the value of such tillage Is questionable, ques-tionable, and whenever It irrmi necessary. It should be I'ghtly done, snd at a time when the growing crop will be damaged tbe Ieat |
