Moit all our American breed ( bave theae requlremonta, and by care-j care-j fut aelectlon at breeding time one j can build up a profitable laying strain , from thla claaa of bfrdi, aucb aa the , Plymouth Rock a or Wyandottea., I The common practice of breeding from the flock aa a whole baa done ( more barm than anything else In mak-l mak-l Ing the flock unprofitable aa egg pro- ducern. Breeding from blrda that produce but one or two clutches of eggs during the year will produce 1 birds of like nature, and breeding a 1 sire that has not tbe laying quality and characteristics bred In him cannot can-not but help to make the situation worse. The success with egg production must begin with breeding. When you have a hen that will lay a large number num-ber of eggs each month during the winter, breed from her. The trait of superior egg production Is a bablt that may be acquired and transmitted. A hen whose ancestors were poor layers lay-ers cannot be expected to be a good layers. No amount of coaxing or coddling cod-dling with mash or feed will induce her to produce an Inusual number of eggs, because tbe trait of superior egg production waa not acquired by ber ancestry and could not therefore be transmitted to her. Tbe selection of tbe male to bead the flock ahould not be neglected. He should bave been bred' from productive pro-ductive ancestry. Tbe male is half Plymouth Rock. the flock, and If bis dam and grand-dam grand-dam were good producers, he should be worth much more as a sire than those whose dam produced only a llm lted number of cggB. lie should have a good constitution showing short beak, broad head and bright eye, neck short and stout breast of good width carried well for ward and of fair depth. The mating of such a sire to a flock of hens bred from laying ancestors cannot but help to give good resulta with proper feeding feed-ing and bousing. Tbe breeding pen should be yarded separate from the whole flock, selecting select-ing for this pen only the very best Kg producers, and this should be done each year. One male with 10 or 12 females will give best results and gg will be of stronger vitality for Incubating purposes. The breeding breed-ing pen should be well cared for. Quarters should be roomy, well llghtr ?d and ventilated. Tbe quarters t-hould at all times be kept clean and disinfected. A variety or grain feed, green cut bone and green feed is absolutely ab-solutely necessary to Insure fertile eggs, and grit and water should b kept before them at all times. Lay Good Sized Eggs. liens that produce not only a goodly number of eggs, but eggs of moderately moderate-ly largo site, (eggs weighing two ounces each on an average) are Plymouth Ply-mouth Rocks, Wysndottes, Rhode Island Is-land Reds, Orpingtons.
