Show 8CH00L MATTERS. Our atticlo in the last Issue on our schools has brought out a suggestion from h West Iielta subscriber that may be worthy of consideration. Ho thinks 'b.'it Instead of dividing the Hinckley nehoo! district there should rather im c consolidation, Lttt tho county be divided Into two school districts dis-tricts only, the division to be between Oasis and Clear Lake, the district sou'h to embrace llolden and Sclplo, and the other districts south. The other division to Include all the districts dis-tricts north of the line. This would glv each district a proportionate lihnre or the railroad and sufficient other assessable property to raise revenue rev-enue enough to build whatever school '.louses are needed In our rapidly prowmg county and also to carry tiiet.i on. As It now Is some districts have to bear a very heavy burden of taxation to build and support their schools. If the funds for new schools were drawn from a large district the burden would not be heavy, and If the fund for the support of schools were apportioned In proportion to school population each school would get Its irtlr hli.re. Kdticatlon Is not a matter of small districts any more than roads. The entire state Is taxed to support our higher educational Institutions, which only a small proportion of the school population of the state attends. The whole county Is more vllallly Interested Interest-ed In common school education. The whole county pays for high schools, why should not the whole county, or at least two or three large districts, pay for the common schools? For Instance, In-stance, West Delta should have a school next fall as there are about sixty children of school age there now, and there will be prot-ably prot-ably 100 there by next fall. It Is attached at-tached to the Abraham district which has not sufficient taxable property to build a school house. The same way with Delta; It Is quite unable to provide pro-vide the school accommodations needed. In a few years both sections will have ample funds to help build school houses for other sections that could not build them alone. It looks as If the argument were In favor of larger districts Instead of smalL-r ones. How does it look to you |
