Show TREATY JSJATIFIED THE HOUSE APPROVES PRESI-DENT PRESI-DENT TAFT'b RECIPROCITY AGREEMENT WITH CANADA. The Majority of the Republicans Voted Against Agreement, But It Received an Almost Solid Democratic Support, Sup-port, Vote Being 221 to 82. Washington. President Taft's reciprocity reci-procity agreement with Canada was ratified In the house of representatives Tuesday night through the support of an almost solid Democratic vote. The McCull bill, carrying the agreement Into effect, ai passed, 221 to 92. The majority of the Itepubllcans present voted against the measure, the division being 78 ayes and 87 noes. The Democratic vote was 143 ayes and only 5 noes. A majority of the republican In-urgent In-urgent present voted for the bill. The McCah bill now goes to the Senate. What Us fate will be 1n that body Is problematical. President Taft believes. If a filibuster can be avoided and a vote takeu, the bill will pass. He Is Insistent that the senate shall act one way or the other, and baa Indicated that he would call an extra session of congress If tt does not do so. The passage of the bill In the house came at the end of a Ion? debate de-bate which at times was as bitter as has been heard on the floor of that chamber In years. The fight was confined con-fined wholly to the Republican side. Democratic members Joined In from Ume to time and taunted the majority major-ity members for their lack of unity. |
