Show ORCHARD GRASS IS VALUABLE Crop Grows Wsll In Shads on Rich, Deep, Sandy Loem Excellent for Permsnsnt Pssturs. Orchard grass grows well In the shade, but It makes a larger growth when aown on rich aandy loam, deep and moist. On such soils It starts early In the spring and grows rapidly. Thus It makes a good grass for a permsnc-nt pasture, but when the ground Is deep and rich It makes a more valuable hay, aa its rapid growth enables one to cut two crops off the ssme land every year. Orchard grass should be sown at the rate of two bushels, with 15 pounds or red clover seed per acre. Sow early In April. We like the plan or sowing the orchsrd grass and clover clov-er with oats The oats are drilled two bushvtls to the acre, with 400 pounds or a standard bone phosphate to tbe acre. Tbe orchard grass and clover Is sown by hand or with the wheelbarrow Just behind the drill, the seed bilng covered with the brush harrow. When the oats make a growth or two Inchea the field Is rolled. roll-ed. When the oats are In bloom the crop is cut ror green reed. Two bushels bush-els or land plaster Is then sown to the acre and the field rolled to firm soli. By the letter part or July, If the season Is favorable, about one to one and a half tons or good hay may be cut to the acre. To grow hesvy crops the field' should be top dressed with rich, well-rotted well-rotted manure every second year. Mr. G., who raises large quantities or It to cut gretn for his cows and to make Into hay, dresses his field every second sec-ond yesr with fermented liquid manure, ma-nure, and every third year with long borse manure. He raises very heavy crops by this system. Orchsrd grass Is one of the best grasses to grow for feeding on farms to cows or horses. When land Is top drv sseJ It will continue to yield hesvy crops usually two crops esch season ror several years and It will then furnish a very thl"k sod to plow down for corn. |
