The company takes its water ou: ol the Sevier river several tulles a? n Leamington. A substantial dlvei 'on dam has been constructed across d river 114 feet long and -23 feet I g'h and 20 feet wide on top. A spill-6? 20 feet wide ha been provided In the dam to take care of high, wgn-r, and an additional spillway 128 'ttl wide with steel gates set In soild concrete has been constructed at 'oe head of the canal for further rejula-Hon rejula-Hon of the flow. On account ot tfli overflow ' created by the dam about five miles of the track of the '3lt Iake Houte railway has 4iad O be moved higher up. ', Soon after the canal leaves t?; ill-version ill-version dam Its course has t 'en blasted out of the solid rock ar ' eix tunnels had to be driven, some cf ' requiring the use of Hurley Is. There are about six miles of ttL expensive ex-pensive and heavy work. After leaving the point of the mountain It extends westward about live miles to ! tic a lateral leading to the syphon I taken out. This main canal la well constructed snd Is ID feet wide on Ch? to lurnlsh electric current for power and lighting purpose. The company expects to furnish water not only for their C.tioo acres of lurm lands north of Lynn, but also for each city lot. The company experts to plant 5.000 shade trees this spring and whllo we were there the engiiifers were busy laying out nrw streets which will be graded and supplied with sldewslks and everything done to make It a desirable place of residence. Already quite a number of new build Ings are in course of construction, and In anticipation of a building boom the Haker Lumber Co. has established a lumber yard In charge of John P. Hor ring, a hustling young manager, who Is getting right out after business. , . The syphon Is being put In by O. H.i Gray & Co. and J. II. Hoyt Is In charge of the work and by the way he was pushing It when we were there It Is probably complete by this time. The railroad company Is now employing em-ploying about 80 uipn at the shops and It Is reported thst the force Is to be increased and the shops enlarged so that all the repair work heretofore done at Salt ljke will be done here. This In connection with the opening of the Sevier Company's lands will make Lynndyl sn Imiwrtani point on the road. y " ' '"' i " : " T."" One advantage of this tract Is that It Is underlaid with gravH at a depth o;' from five to lift en feet of the surface, sur-face, so that it will have good drain age and there will never be any danger dan-ger of water-logelng. An analysis of the soil also shows an absence of mineral min-eral IHIU Is esjiecially interested In this project as It will mean watei cn lands adjacent to the town that seem eseelally adapted to fruit rais ing. The picture which accompanies this article was taken several years ago and does not show the Improvement that have since been made. bottom with strong banks on which a roadway has been constructed. From the syphon latcul the main csnal extends ex-tends southward and will eventually furnish water for the bench lying about a mile and a half north of Delta. At a point about two mlh-s south of the syphon lateral the canal can be emptied Into Fool Creek Sink. It is the Intention to fill this sink or reservoir reser-voir from the flood waters 'and uie It during the Irrigation season to water tbe lands adjacent, while tbe water from the canal will be used to Irrigate the lands further away. Hy banking up this sink a few feet In several places sufficient water can be Impounded Im-pounded to Irrigate 15,nu0 acres of land. While there Is some rough land in this vicinity It has been nearly all cut out of tbe tract taken up by and for tbe Sevier company. The company has bought some land from the state, has acquired some from individuals, and considerable has been taken up by Individuals In-dividuals under homestead and divert acta with the Intention of buying their water from the Sevier company. Many Leamington people have taken up land on this tract and they believe they have some of the best land In tbe county. Tbe water for Lynn and the C.oou acres of land on that side of the river Is taken across the river by mesns of a continuous wooden stave syphon about a tulle Sung, bound with Iron hoops six and four Inches apart. For-bays For-bays of concrete admit to the syphon, which la CO Inches la circumference from the entrance to the river bank, and It Is 40 Inches the rest of tbe way to lb outlet There Is a fall of 125 feet to tbe river bank, and the large sise of the syphoa la to provide extfa water for sa electric power plant. It Is expected that 1200 horse power will be developed here which will be used |
