Show Deltans Visit Cave I Used By Indians Of The Long Ago Sunday, Rube Nelson of Leam-Emory Leam-Emory John and Frank Beckwith ington, piloted Marion Killpack, Sr., to a cave near the top of Gil-son Gil-son Peak, northeast of Leamington. Leaming-ton. On the way up we saw two geese on the river; they calmly sat while a fright, and our car as well, passed them in the narrows. Then as we got into the canyons Marion saw a deer. Tracks of them galore. On the way up the hill we found colony coral, a cup coral worth while, some ammonites I had never nev-er seen before (hence late geologically), geo-logically), two very nice gastropods, gastro-pods, and strange to say, fragments frag-ments of petrified bones of some creature, size of a big ox, extinct bison, or migrant musk ox; as we were far above the level of ancien Lake Bonneville, this material dates back farther. In the cave were several -figures done by the ancient Indians of far distant time, one of a man in action .holding a large disc in each hand; this was quite nice.. One of what I am inclined to think is a Rainbow youth glyph - -that is, a man with rainbow arc above his head, done in red paint. 1 small man pecked only, no paint A dandy blunt-bodied man, some j what rounded shoulders, and a.j large disc or shied on his right arm with rays on the disc. Excellently Ex-cellently done, even though crude. Possibly the Sun-Father. Another of a man with sloping shoulders, and narrow, wedge-shaped body, neatly done. What may be either a hand ,or a bear paw glyphs, four fingers or toes. And a geo- metric form I have never seen before. be-fore. And the cutest, nicest little snake, done in read paint on the celling over the black, well preserved, pre-served, and so excellently drawn that it along was well worth the trip. Then to an old mine, where we saw the date 1861 on an old abandoned ab-andoned cook stove outside the crudest hut you ever saw, roof caved in, wood dry and rotting. I got a hand-wrought old fashioned nail out of a board, a treasure. Marion got one. The windlass at this miner's old workings showed wear of between lA and, Inch on the bearings, but even though we examined his tailings carefully it must have been a flat failure It was a very nice trip, well worth while, and full of interest. Emery and Marion wish me to express ex-press the thanks of us to Rube. (Sssshhh! If I keep Marion in training for eight more years I'll make a driver of him yet. Missed only one chuck hole on the whole trip. Says if we want to , he'll go back and hit that one. |
