Show Firemen Fight Fire, Eat Smoke At Bridge Blaze Monday at 11:20 a. m. the Delta Volunteer Fire Department was cal led to a blaze on the second canal bridge 1M miles north of Delta. This was the hottest fire the fire men have faced since the Utah Poultry fire in 1947. The creosoted timber burned and fromed dense clouds of black smoke that carried car-ried into town across Clark street. The wind funnelled smoke under un-der the bridge where the firemen were working. They had to hold their breath and work in shifts with the hose as one would relieve re-lieve another and let him come up for air. They worked over two hours put ting out the blaze. The railing was burned off one side of the bridge and it was estimated that it had lost less than 25 of its strength The bad half of the bridge is now blocked off and is open for one-way traffic traf-fic until repairs are made. Between March 2 and April 2, the Delta VFD have been to 13 fires, 4 in town and 9 out of town. The most costly fire was" the John E. Steele 2-story home on March 23, where damages were estimated at $2000. Most of the fires in March were caused by a combination of match, weeds and wind. |
