Show lUm't Kc Half Safe from Insects Alfalfa seed growers should complete their insecticide applications applica-tions for Lygus on first crop seed ns soon as possible. Lygus populations popula-tions are increasing rapidly and many fields are showing scattered bloom. It is important that the seed growers control insects now rather than wait until the alfalfa is in full bloom so that the insecticide in-secticide will not be detrimental to honeybees which are very essential es-sential for a high seed yield. Growers should apply 1 lbs. of technical DDT an acre for Lygus bugs when using the spray. This means from 4 to 5 pints of 30 DDT per acre, or from 5 to 6 pints of 25 DDT per acre. Smaller dosages dos-ages will kill Lygus but will "ot ive the long residual protection which is needed on first crop seed. When using DDT dust, apply at the rate of 20 pounds of 10 DDT per acre. Remember, do the job right and it will profit you in the long run. If it becomes necessary to practice insect control when al-"alfa al-"alfa is in bloom, one should uso Toxaphene. This is not harmful to honeybes if applied between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. Seed growers who are in doubt as to the insect population of their field are urged to contact D. M. Allred, survey entomologist, who will be glad to sweep their fields and help with any other insect pest control problems. This service is free to the seed growers and Mr. Allred may be contacted at the county offices in Delta. |
