Show Chatter Box Dear Suzy, Delia Johnson, Sutherland housewife, house-wife, has had to subscribe to the Chronicle to get some news. Before that time she had a phone and could get it that way, but came a few days ago the phone service was interupted in the middle of an interesting story and has been that way since. Getting her phone cut off is a long story and goes back to the American Legion Post 89 Armistice Day banquet, so it is really Post 89 that is responsible for her phone being cut off and. I think they should do something about it. It seems that Maxine Jackson Owens wanted to get some tickets for the banquet and called for Oz Johnson's house. She was told the line was busy on the several attempts at-tempts she made, and she should hiave known it would be as La Veil was home. So Maxine went over to see her sister, Delia, and they were holding a sewing bee, and in between be-tween stitches Maxine would call for Oz's place, but still the line was busy. Maxine beaame rather perturbed about the whole deal and got in an argument with the operator with Maxine putting in the final word and telling the operator op-erator to have her phone taken out at (the earliest convenience. Next day Delia looked out to see a man rolling wire around in her yard, and went out to enquire the reason for making la booby trap in her back yard. She was told that orders had been to take out her phone. This Delia heatedly denied, but the lineman was deaf on that side and went about his work with the result that the phone was deader than a Dewey button. Delia had to walk over to Max-ine's Max-ine's so she could use a phone and called up Rulon asking him why her phone was being snapped out.' Rulon told her all he knew was thlat a call had come from her phone asking that it be taken out, and wanting to oblige, was only doing what they were asked to do. Delia was in a dither. She knew she hadn't ordered the phone out, didn't want it out, and would much prefer it to stay put. Rulon held his ground and told Delia again I that the call had come from her phone to take it out, land presto, no sooner said than done. A conference was called to iron out the whole deal, put the cards on the table (they were Rook cards, if you want to know) and get Delia in good standing and a phone that worked. So we next find Maxine, Max, Rulon and Delia sitting around a table. Max looked at his cards land saw he had three 14's so he bid 70 and made 80 In between hands the phone deal was talked over and it was explained to Rulon that it was Maxine that had told them to take out her phone, and not Delia. This development upset Rulon so that he trumped Delia 14 (he and Delia were partners) part-ners) but no one paid any attention at-tention as the phone was the important im-portant issue at stake, and anyway any-way Rulon made his bid. The outcome of the conference is unknown, also unknown is who won first prize, and I don't know if Delia is listening to the merry ringing of her phone these days or encounter when one opens one's mouth is that one is likely to get one's phone cut off, or you sister's phone. I would lilted to have seen the expression on the face of Eb Stap-ley, Stap-ley, our local game warden and pincher of poachers, when he was out deer hunting with no gun. He was horse back riding lalong when he came upon some deer. He hopped hop-ped off the horse and without looking around, reached for his gun that should have been in a scabbard by the saddle. His larm made a wide sweep while he kept his eyes on the deer. He felt no gun so he made a wider sweep. Finally he was afraid of dislocating dislocat-ing his arm searching for his weapon, wea-pon, and so looked around. The scabbard wias empty, and I can almost al-most picture the incredulous look on his face when he made that discovery. By back tracking he did finally come upon his gun, but when he returned to where he had seen the deer they were gone. Of course, there were a number of deer hunters that could just tas well have walked around with no gun, but it is a bad example to set, and one that might cause comment com-ment among other hunters at that time of the year. We have just 31 shopping days left until the day we open Christmas Christ-mas present we didn't want, and this year I am really going io do my shopping early. None of this vaiting until the last minute for And another thing, the start of it all those tickets to the Post 89 banquet it is not known if Maxine got them, and if she did get them whether or not she had the nerve to go to the banquet and leave her sister, Delia, cut off from the world with no phone. Of course, lall this time Maxine, the orderer out of the phone has enjoyed good service on her phone, although she says it is a little inconvenient to have Delia walking in .any time of the day or night 'and wanting to use her phone. Maxine slays if Delia wants a phone so bad, why doesn't she get one of her own. This Delia would like very much, as she is tired of walking walk-ing a half mile to Maxine's house each time she wants to use a phone. 1 suppose it will all be ironed out iand it would help speed up the process if Post 89 would vote a resolution to the effect that they would iike to see Delia Johnson have a phone. It's the least they could do', seeing as how they were the cause of it all. It all goes to prove that along with the other ' hazards one may |
