Show TIMBER SALES l DOUBLED IN YEAR1 j Sales of National Forest timber in the Fiscal Year 1917 were moro than doublo those of 191Q, according to the annual Report of the Forester. The total amount sold exceeded two billion feet and is valued at more than $3,715,000. During the same period about 727 million feet wore cut and removed, for which tho purchasers pur-chasers paid $1,507,303 Into tho Federal Fed-eral Treasury. Tho largest sales were mado in Oregon, whero about 683 million board feet were disposed of. In addition to tho timber sold, approximately ap-proximately 113 million board feet valued at almost $150,000 was cut under, free use permit by more than 41,000 settlers living near the National Na-tional Forests and depending on tho Forests for firewood and building material to improve their homesteads Tho timber business on tho East-as East-as compared with the Western Forests, For-ests, showed a decided increase the report states. More than threo times as much timber was sold and moro than twice as much cut as in 1916. Tho material disposed of, it Is pointed point-ed out, Is largely of poor quality and Its removal will improve the forest growth. |
