Show r fw r WINTER SCHOOL KOIl FARMERS The Agricultural Collego of Utah Is performing a real service to tho state and the .nation so far as it is successful in its efforts to bring tho' collego to the people. In other words, servlco is one of the big central ideas of modern education, and particularly of the higher institutions of learning In the state. Indeed, In-deed, it they do not perform servlco of a marked nature na-ture to the public at large, then they do not Justify tho high per capita cost of their maintenance. One of tho methods by which the Agricultural College Is endeavoring to reach the people of the stafe Is by conducting the short winter courso of study designed especially for practical farmers. It Is well worth tho while of tho ambitious farmer, whether he bo a oung man or moro advanced in years, to see it this course does not offer something to fill his needs, .villi to make nn effort, in caso it does, to attend these vlnter schools. This year tho college authorities feol that the courso Is particularly timely on account of the Importance to tho country nnd"to the world of food production. It feels that In tho present food crisis as many as possible of the farmers should -t be given a fow weeks of Intensive training In the problems prob-lems of greater production and conservation. It is very important that farmers understand what crops must be Increased and how this increase can bo brought about; and It Is Just as Important that tho housewives learn how to decrease tho consumption consump-tion of the foodstuffs needed for export wlthoutMes-senlng wlthoutMes-senlng the food value of the dally diet. Hence, extensive ex-tensive courses covering these vital points have been organized. w It Is a pleasure to hear that Indications point to a largo enrollment for tills winter term workftftam all parts of tho state, representing all vocations. Such a response was anticipated last spring when the Institution In-stitution decided to organize tho special winter term. Probably our Utah institution Is the Ilrst of its kind in the United States to divide Its year Into three parts, in order to fit its work more nearly to the needs of tho community a plan by which tho student may enter en-ter at the beginning of any of tho three terms, continue con-tinue for one or more terms as conditions permit, and then discontinue with his work completed and his credit recorded. I It Is easy to see why this novel system should i i appeal to the farmer, because It permits him to stay on his farm during tho harvest and planting season, and attend school during the winter months when the work Is slack.
