Show MEMORIAL DAY IS FITTINGLY OBSERVED AT CITY CEMETERY - Great Throng in Attendance at First Public Meeting Ever Held in '"'City of the Dead" Attorney Law Gave Inspiring In-spiring Talk. There was a largo Wrong of cttl-sens cttl-sens from, far and near in attendance at the public meeting held in the Logan City cemetery yesterday morning morn-ing at 11 o'clock. Persons from nearly every part of the county wore present, having come hero to decorate tho graves of their departed dead. The forenoon weathor of Decoration Day was nothing short of Ideal. The clouds cleared away and the sun was out and gavo us a little sunshlno with the abundance of rain, which we havo (had the past ten days. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Roy Bullcn, who was the master of coremonles. Samuel B. Mltton, as director, and Miss Gates, as organist, led the musto which was joined in by the multitudes. A wry fervent prayer was offered up by Rev. E. T. Lewis, following which the congregation in unison sang "Nearer My God to Thee," following follow-ing which Mayor Bullen stated the purpose of the meeting and then Introduced In-troduced Attorney a! A. Law, who gave a very able address. Attorney Law's remarka. were shaped to bring about a. better spirit of, brotherly lovo between neighbors and frlonds. He deplored class distinction and said It was occasions of this kind which bring men closer together. Referring to tho work which men accomplish for tho public good, tho speaker said wo have Just as great heroes In times of peace as wo have in times of war. He referred feelingly feel-ingly to the great work of the many pioneer families, representatives of whom wero found lu 'every quarter of the cemetery. The Thatcher family,- tho Maughan family, tho Ricks family, the Benson family, tho Smith family, and others wero mentioned. An appeal was made to all present to let the tender memories of thoso gone before toach and inspire them to better bet-ter living. The congregation sang "My Country 'TIs of Thee." J. Z. Stewart pronounced the 'benediction. Thoso present could not help being be-ing Impressed with the beauty of tho city cemetery this year. It seems that the grounds never took on a bet-tor'appearanco. bet-tor'appearanco. Tho grass and flow-era.are flow-era.are so abundant. Tho lots, as a Wholo, are In better shape. Many new,1 monuments have been erected and" beautiful trees havo been planted plant-ed 'efjfy where". Probably four thousand thous-and people visited tho cemetery yos-I yos-I torday. |
