Show 1ATEST SITS ARE SHORT BUT SWEET, SAVSMISS MASON All' Are Cut Short to Topg of High Shoes. Many Startling Notes In Evening Gowns By Margaret Maion Though Susan and Sally Are not of the ballet, Their new skirts are all short but sweet; For since it's their passion To follow tho fashion, Thoy'vo cut them about two small feet. New York, Oct. 17. I saw an exhibition exhi-bition of imported garments nt a big department storo this week that had run the gauntlet from Paris to Havro packed In huge osier baskets, and lashed on tho back of a touring car They seemed not the least bit the worso for tho wear of war. The most striking feature of the whole collection was tho fact that each and every skirt was cut oft short to the tops of tho high shoes. Possibly their hurried Journey, Instead In-stead of making them arrive breathless breath-less with short "pants" had acted In a similar manner upon their skirts. Whatever the cause, however, the effect ef-fect Is an exposure of well turned ankles that seems Just barely skirting tho conventions. The Evening Gowns Next to tho shortness of the skirts the most startling noto is tho nlmost total lack of -anything tangible in tho bodices. Positively they consist of merely a wisp of tullo passing over each shoulder for a high girdle to cling to desperately. Naturally this is only truo of the evening gowns. One of tho prettiest pretti-est of these is of pale pink velvet with a high girdle and a tunic that Is long on one hip and short on the other. The underskirt Is of white satin, sat-in, and between It and tho pink velvet vel-vet upper tunic an Intermediate tunic tun-ic of exquisite gold embroidered net. The bodice consists merely of the velvet glrdlo supplemented by a slight drapery of tho gold net and white tulle caught up on each shoulder shoul-der with a small gold embroidered, ornament. No Wild Gesticulations A charming model for a debutante Is of palest pink taffeta with a skirt of four corded flounces flaring out quaintly liko a vorltablo crlmollno. A full rose nestling In tho high girdle gir-dle and billows of softest, blush (I should think it would) pink tullo ro venls a snowy throat nnd perfect arms to tho best ndvantngo. Another striking evening gown of black lace over white satin has a wide piece of tho black chnntlly caught nt each shoulder Hint falls behind be-hind straight to tho floor llko a train. Another novel uso of black chnntlly 0110 a black velvet gown precludes the wearer from any wild gesticulation. gesticula-tion. The lace Is caught on each sldo of the girdle In front, passed over ov-er tho shoulders like a capo, tho width of the lace being the wholo length of tho arms. It is sewed up Into long tight' sleeves through which the arms are slipped, ( and then the laco keeps on its way around into tho circular cape effect and Is caught In the middle of tho girdle behind. Hence tho wearer looks as It shu had sprouted a pair of Chantllly wings, which sho undoubtedly finds very Irksome when sho feels her back hair needs fixing. Fur Collars Among tho suits .nnd afternoon frockg fur Is all nnd every where. Fitch skunk and our old friend the beavor aro tho favorites. Tho now-ost now-ost collars shown on tho coat suits aro deep flat egects that reach from the shoulder to shoulder in tho rear without intruding in tho front a little lit-tle bit. They aro mostly of tho fur but u few aro devoloped In heavy silk and volvot. Black volvet, by the way, and black witln form m.st of tho afternoon gowns, whllo gabardines, gabar-dines, velvets and broadcloths compose com-pose the smartest suits. On the gowns tho waistlines are preferably long and either tight fitting fit-ting or Buowlng tho looso straight lino. The separate waists and blouses blou-ses to tho coat suits all show the high waistline. In the whole collection there Isn't a frock or a suit that does not have eomo glint of a gold ornamont, a shimmer or sequins, a gleam of Jet or tho shine of a button or bead. This year all that glitters Is not goldl It's sequins, spangles and what you will, Just so It gleams, glints or glistens. |
