Show Thousands of Civil War Veterans Members of the Grand Army of The Re public in Detroit for Their Annual Encampment Detroit, Aug. 31. All Detroit shook hands today with white haired heroes of the Civil War. More than' 5000 members of the Grand Army of the Republic and affiliated organiza-tlons organiza-tlons had reached tho city when the 48th annual encampment was official" ly opened this afternoon. Every .train, boat and lnterurban car arriving arriv-ing In Detroit carried scores of old soldiers and their wives and daughters. daugh-ters. It was stated at G. A. It. headquarters that 30,000 delegates would be hero by tomorrow. Today was devoted to committee meetings at tho headquarters of the G. A. It. nnd several of tho associated associ-ated bodies. Tho committees worked work-ed In executlvo session to get tho convention decks cleared for action as a veteran expressed It. It was hoped to complete the routine work .today, so the committee members would be able to Join their comrade and their wives tomorrow on boat rides. The first public meeting will be held in the Light Guard armory tomorrow to-morrow night when the terans will be welcomed by Governor Ferris and other citizens of Michigan. Several responses will be made by the commanders com-manders of the various orders, In-eluding In-eluding Washington Gardner of Albion, Al-bion, commander in chief of tho G. A. It. Prominent Grand Army offlcers have commented pleasantly on the arrangements for receiving tho wearers wear-ers of the bluo.' Doy Scouts who have played no particular part on tho receiving line, havo won much pralso. They form tho veterans body guard. Several persons havo been mentioned men-tioned as proBpcctlvo candidates to succeed Washington Gardner as commander com-mander In chief. No veteran can hold the office two seasons In succession suc-cession and sentiment has not favored fav-ored the election of a man who has not been a department commander. The following past, commanders are said to be in the race: C. W. Ulodgett Ohio; David J. Palmer, Iowa; A. O. Sommers, Indiana; In-diana; Frank O. Cole, New Jersey; P. H. Coney, Kansas hnd Thomas H.
