Show "SERVANT" AN ABUSED WORD President of United 8tates, Heads ef Banks, Ministers, Physicians, Are In 8ame Class. It Is a plly tlint we have nllowcd opprobrium op-probrium to attach to the good old word "servant," opprobrium utterly unmerited. un-merited. Talk about "help," or the latest lat-est equivalent, "mold," used quite Inappropriately, In-appropriately, Pays the Youth's Companion, Com-panion, does not alter circumstances In the least, nor Is thero any reason why we should wish them altered. Every one who Is worth anything la a servant. The merchant aervee his customers. If he serves them not well, they discharge him. The lawyer serves his clients, the-minister his parishioners, parishion-ers, the doctor his patients. The president presi-dent of a bank Is a servant, and so Is the president of a railway. The president presi-dent of the United States is the hired servant of the people of the United States, and few servants In any occo patlon are more abused by their mat ten. Service, well and faithfully per. formed, is the only real dignity, and nil the outward pomp and Insignia of rank are but badges of service, and disgraceful if they are not earned, i Service Is life. It Isonly when we are doing something to 'serve the large movement of the world what we are entitled to live In It, that we really do live In It. Life is measured by usefulness. useful-ness. Of nil the varied affliction that swlft-footea age can bring, none is more oppressive than the sense of diminished di-minished capacity for service. Not to be ministered unto, but to minister, not to be sorved, but to serve, Is the utterance of the highest authority author-ity In spiritual matters. There Is but one disgrace connected with service of any kind, and that Is to serve III. Let us perform whatever service falls to us, large or small, high or low, with all the zeal and all the strength that is In us. Then we shall he sure that when we depart we shall be missed, if only a little; and there is no more solid satisfaction In the world than that. 0 |
