Show NEW CHANGE IUYSTEM DISPATCHING IS TO BE MADE EASIER Thu work of train dispatching, one tit thu most exnctlng In tlio whole field of railroad mnnngement, Is to be made much easier for the dispatchers of the Southern Pacific Company. On several ontlro divisions and on parts of other divisions thu work has already al-ready been lightened to a considerable extent. Tho strain that the dispatchers dispatch-ers usually work under Is being and will bo alleviated by the use of tho telephone for train dispatching. Tho old method of using the tele ginph key for nil dispatching has been found too slow. Where It frequently icqulrcd a considerable time to trans mlt trnln orders by telegraph, n comparatively com-paratively short time Is now required, lly a system of repeating nil messages nnd writing them down ub they are Rent nnd delivered, tho operator and dispatcher nro oblo to keep even n more complete record of all that transpires trans-pires than If using tho telegraph. Practically the only difference between tho two ByBtcms Is that tho telephones uiges direct conversation and the telegraph only written words transmitted trans-mitted by tho comparatively slow Morse alphabet. With the telephone tho dispatcher gets In clvscr prrsonnl touch with every man on tho road through the uro of that Instrument than ho over was ublo to do with tho telegraph. . At the present tlmo tolephono dispatching dis-patching Is In operation between Sal- I Inns and Santa Harbnra on tho Coast I Division of tho Southern Pacific lines; over the entire Shasta division; on tho Sunset, the Sunset and Western and the MrKlttrlck brunches, and- will soon be established between Sacramento Sacra-mento and Sparks. Kxehnnges are being established and any operator on the line need only take down his receiver re-ceiver nnd pronounce tho name of his station to secure the immediate nt- tcntion of tho dispatcher. The ills pntcher has full control over the line, nnd no operator Is allowed to call up another station. The dispatcher will do the calling for him If business requires re-quires It. It Is only a question of time until the telegraph ' will serve only ns an emergency service on tho Southern Pacific lines. Another advantage ad-vantage of tho telephone sys tejn is the simplicity, it being posslblo for any member of n train crew to tap a telephone wlro nnd tell of a I trnln wreck, while It requires nn expert ex-pert to tap n telegraph lino. |
