Show Locating Our "Best Americans.! Any particular person who Is dlssat-Isfacttied dlssat-Isfacttied with Americans as they average and Is searching for the "best" of the breed Is directed to tho Pacllic slope by Mr. W. II. Page, who writes In the World's Work on this interesting topic, describing life In the Pacllic coast cities, Mr. Page says: "The surprise that a stranger tlnds In the life of these cities Is that tho stuigglc for linanclal success Is not as lleiceasit has been In our voungcltlcs of tho middle west. Life seems less Intense than in Chicago, for instance, or in Denver or Kansas City. If men do not quite take It leisurely or easily, they at least recognize that some Joy in the Journey Is quite as good as the prle at the end of It. They do work, but they play, too, ami they take time to enjoy themselves, to bo hospitable, to travel, to consider other things as well as tho game of business. "Life here has its own kinds of provincialism prov-incialism no doubt. It is a long way from New York and Washington, but It Is a long way also from the point of view of New York or Washington or Chicago. Yet there is a grateful relief re-lief also from the old prejudices and from tho provincialisms of tho eastern states. The talk that you hear In the clubs In Now York and lioston and Chicago seems very local and remote when you get to tho Pacific coast. There is local gossip and small talk a-plenty In the clubs of these Pacllic cities, but hero big subjects seem larger. You begin to feci that tho United States is very much bigger than It seemed In New York. These people have u way, and that without toasting, of assuming that thtjy and not the eastern peoplo arc the masters of things that the ultimate American Ameri-can Judgment will be their judgment." judg-ment." This writer contends that westerners western-ers "think in large units" and that they know eastern llfo because they came from the eastern or middle states, whereas eastern men do not know western llfo. He finds that tho dominant man on the coast ramo from tho middle states and has American traditions for several generations. So, after all, the whole country has to do with makln tuo "best Americans" wherever they tuppen to be Just now. |
