To Sister Adallnc Marker. In Lincoln City and Vermont state You entered this, your second estate, It as Eighteen Hundred and Thirty-four Thirty-four An angel entered your father's door As guardian of your noble soul. Faithful till you reach the goal. Of a tender mother's care, at eight, To be deprived It was thy fate. However hard this was to thee Thou wer't a child of destiny. Hlessed with parents who loved the Lord. You look to heaven for reward, For all tho trials you must endure To make eternal life secure. One more short year had scaacly gone Until ttiy fathers work was done. In Eighteen Hundred and foity-thrcc He passed from this mortality. There near the city of Nuuvoo Early an orphan left wcic you. No soul can feel, no tongue can tell How near to buist your heart would swell, Andyet)Our trials were not all o'er; Can so frail n form endure more? Yes! Though a thousand griefs coin- blno They cannot change God's own due time. To look upon a Prophet's face A sight that f-line cannot erase, A privilege which has been to you A comfort that has helped you through. ' I O'er thousand miles of trackless waste Of blood-stained paths thy feet have traced. With brothers true at last you land Amid these vales, a tired band Of plonccis whose struggles wrought A marvel, and a victory bought. Few youthful lives of sixteen years Have been so full of bitter tears. But still thy work had Just begun, Since then, good soul, how much you've done. Entrusted with the cares of life, At eighteen years became a wife, Failing hard to build it Hom6 And not In this to work alone: Called to aid thy sisters too And teaching others how to do; To guide the young in early youth, Assist them to obtain the truth. Another sphere destined to 1111, Your labors are extended still, To help the poor when In distress, Pour on oil that you possess And cheer the broken heart. Your work Was all. of this and moic, and never shirk A duty, though severe and hard, Nor counsel ever disregard. Still greater heights you yet must climb, To living mortals not confined. Tho dead themselves have heard thy voice, A thousand souls do now rejoice. Though three score )e;trs and Unaro thine """ Few lives arc tilled out so sublime. ' From early )outh to good old age You'vo been an actor on the stage. Your part, though early was begun, To tho very last Is nobly done. To you, dear Sister, we owe a debt Of gratitude, Remember, mortals may forget, " Rut God never does, and you shall see Rich treasures In eternity. Look up, the end Is almost In sight, Thy spirit halls It with delight And all they sisters Join and say . God bless you to your latest day. Ouson Smith. |
