Show B A LITTLE HISTORY. H At one time the citlcns of Logan B invited the Tcllurldo people to install B a light plant in this city. The Tellu- H ride came, looked over the situation, H saw the advantage, and with as liber- H al a franchise as they could ask for or H the city grant, they put a system in H Logan. It cost them nothing to come H in and 'their system may have cost H them 17,"i(K). Ten years later the city B which granted the franchiso says to H the Tellurlde company, "You were H invited in here it cost you nothing. H;. j In ten years you have done a splendid B J business and have made money, big Kf money. Wo arc glad of It, but we arc B' in condition today to put In an elec- Bi lrlc system of our own. Will yuu B sell?" The answer came, "Yes we B wi" sc"' Wo navo a better market B for our power, can get more money for B W The c'ty went ahead and put in B ' lls Pnt' and then said to the Tcilu- B ' ride people, "How much do you want B for your plant?" The answer came, iwe aro not hawking our plant for sale. Make us an offer." Rather non-plus H scd but still desirous of doing thb B rlllL thing, there was consideration B i of the proposition and the city then B 1. salll: "Your franchise cost you B e nothing, you havo made big money on B ? your Investment, and you have today B a system that cxpcits say is wortli $10,000. That systcmlls really worth nothing to us, but that your coming and going shall cost you nothing wc will glvo you $20,000, and you have clear the great profits you have made In the ten years you have been here." The offer was scorned, and though the chief of the Tellurlde company has admitted that his system Is worth but $10,000, it is now lnslstcdthat the city shall pay $35,000 or 845,000 for granting the company prlvllcgo to do business In this city. The .republican party's ticket is pledged to not pay this exorbitant price, and Is left free to pay any reasonable rea-sonable sum. The democratic party's ticket is pledged to solve the dlfllculty promptly. Now Inasmuch as Mr. Nunn has repeatedly refused to enter into any negotiations tending toward the settlement or tho difficulty on any other basis than about 835,000 or 10,000 casli, or bankablo paper, and of ten said that the city will jet have to pay the company Its price, the only way In which Jho democratic party can solve the dlfllculty is by paying that price. It's up to the voters. If they desire de-sire to glvo tho Tellurlde pcoplo &25,-000 &25,-000 or $30,000 for tho return of a franchise fran-chise which cost them nothing, then vote the democratic ticket. If they want to stand behind the city plant and the people who havo supported that city plant rather than the Hercules system, then they must vote the republican re-publican ticket. |
