Tho forests of the Hawaiian Islands havo been studied by tho servants employed em-ployed by tho Department of Agrlcul turo. Thcro nro two very distinct kinds of forests In tho Islands, ono on tho drlor lowlands near tho sea and tho other on the mountain slopes, where thero Is a heavy rainfall. The coastal forest Is composed exclusively of "algaroba" or tho "mesqulto" ol Dur Southwest, which was Introduced by Father Ilachelot in 1837. From tht original tree, which Is still standing It Is estimated that at least 50,000 acres of forest hnvo sprung, fairly well distributed over the different Is lands. Tho nativo forejt of tho moun tain slopes Is distinctly of tropical character. Nono of tho familiar trees of tho north temperate zone aro present. pres-ent. Ono looks in vain for oaks, tht maple, plno or spruce. Tho moro lm portnnt trees nro tho "lehua," "koa, "mamnno" nnd "kukul." |
