Show JUMPED IN THE RIVER. Indians Drowned While Fleeing From Imaginary Danger. Seattle. Two half-breed sons ot Henry Detrich, Alaska Commercial agent at Bethel, on the Kuskokwlm river, and four natives lost their lives by Jumping overboard from a small steamboat on tho Kuskokwlm about July 10. Tho men, whose experience on board steam vessels was limited, wero frightened out of their wits by steam escaping from tho safety valve of the craft and, fearing an explosion, tho two Detrich boys nnd five natlvo passengers jumped overboard Into the swift current of tho river. One of tho natives was rescued with difficulty by the crew of tho boat, but six wero swept away and drowned. |
