Show CITY COUNCIL DOES THINGS Buys and Sells Street Pole Service. Reservoir, Crusher, and Other Matters. A t a special ssssion of the Logun city council Wednesday evening a deal In which the city and the Hell Telephone Co. aic to become Joint owners of poles owned by each has been finally completed. The city seemed title to a one half interest in ,Vi poles now owned by the Telephone compan), and already has a half interest in :i5s. The Hell already has a half Interest ln:i")S, and secuies a half Interest In .'!5S owned exclusively by the city. This leaves the city considerably to the good, the half Interest bringing one half the original cost. Many of the poles are to be painted and vv lapped, lap-ped, thus causing them to take on a better appearance. The lecent electrocution of one of the Independent 'Phone men, brought up a consideration of the Hercules's rights to cairy high voltage wires to the danger of the public, and the matter was placed In the hands of Major Itobinson and Attorue) Keeler to investigate. The franchise granted the Heicules people I Is very liberal and In all probability there Is no clause to cover the matter. Hertofoic the city has notcaicd to Insist In-sist on certain desiiable linjnove-ments linjnove-ments lu the Hercules sj stein for the reason that such action was certain to be constated as olfenslvc and the result of f i lotion between the city and the power company. As the matter mat-ter is represented to us, high voltage is ucccssaiv and insulation on high voltage Is of little or no serv ice. The unfoitunatc part of the Heicules system Is that the transformer house Is in the center of the city and the high voltage where there is the greatest, tangle of wires. It is said however, that all distributing wires should be insulated, but that they are not. It was recited at the council meeting that a baic wire carrying '-'00 volts, sulllclent to shock one seveicly, fell the other day. A horse tramped on It and there was a slight mlxup. Falling wires arc not an uncommon occurrence with any company, but there is much protection protec-tion In the insulation. The matter will bo Investigated thoroughly. The council coming to the conclusion conclu-sion that the reservoir on the Logan, Hyde Park and Smlthlleld canal Is not large enough to store suilliclcnt water for city use, passed a resolution authorizing the committee on waterworks, water-works, with the city engineer associated, associat-ed, to consider the matter of enlarging enlarg-ing this reservoir, the placing in of settling tanks, and mane a report. It was decided that tho city should Join with canal companies and purchase pur-chase a water meter. It was ordered that tho committee on streets get the rock crusher working work-ing at once. Jos. K. Wilson's bid for the paving of South First West street was accepted. accept-ed. A resolution for tho laying of tho' mains in District No. 14 was passed. |
