Show SCARCE ACADEMIC. Question of IleclBirooltr With Canada Can-ada la Merely Absurd. The question of reciprocity Is regarded regard-ed by the liostou Transcript as an academic one merely. Kben 8. Draper, who Is mating a brave and manly effort ef-fort for second place on the state ticket this fall and Is willing to win or lose on tho Issue of straight out protectionism, protection-ism, has expressed n similar opinion. He, too, regards the question as outside out-side of the practical nnd inside of the academic. It Is not clear that either the Transcript or Mr. Draper Is right. The Standard Dictionary given the following fol-lowing definition: Academic. ft, 1. Of or pertulnlnK to nn academy, coIIcro or university; scholurly, c)nlcal. 2. Clusslenl and literary or Ken-eral Ken-eral ns dlMlnenlnhed from technical or professional; as the academic department of an American university. 3. Of or re-latin to any f.oclety for the promotion of art. literature, science or tho like. 4. (A.) HelonKlnK to the acudemy, the school of philosophy founded by Pluto at Athens. It Is not easy to see that Canadian reciprocity comes under any of these heads. It Is uot of and does not pertain per-tain to any academy, college or university; uni-versity; It Is not scholarly; much less is It classical. Neither Is It classical and literary or general as distinguished from technical or professional. Certainly Cer-tainly It Is not of and does not relate to nuy society for the promotion of art, literature, science or the like. Least of all does It belong to the academy, the school of philosophy founded by Plato of Athens. Literary it may be lu a certain sense, for a vast amount of what might possibly bo called literature litera-ture has helped to muddle up the question ques-tion of reciprocity with Canada, l!o-Ing l!o-Ing absolutely Impossible and wholly Impractical, to call It academic is to cast a slur upon a dignified term. To seriously discuss the question "When the Sky Falls We Shall Catch Larks" would not, we think, be considered academic. Yet the discussion of Canadian Cana-dian reciprocity Is very like that. No; It Is not academic. It Is merely nl-stird. |
