Tho treaty ot peace between Itussla nnd Japan was signed by tho representatives of the two empires nt 3:47 p. m. Tuesday. On the instnnt of tho consummation of tho great historical act n salute was fired nt tho United Stntea navy yard on Klttery Point. , Both Russian and Japanese missions, mis-sions, on their arrival at tho nRvy yard, wero received nt tho entrance of the building by Admiral Mead, whllo two companlos of marines commanded com-manded by Major Moses rendered military mil-itary honors. The copies of tho treaty of peace brought to tho navy yard had been carefully compared by tho secretaries of the two missions In order to avoid the necessity of reading them before the signing, nt which personages extraneous ex-traneous to the negotiations assisted. When tho Bocretarles had ascertained tho perfect exactness of tho two copies of tho treaty, tho plonlpotontlarles snd the other mombers of tho two missions entered tho conference hall, nccompanled by Assistant Socretnry Pelrco, Governor McLano, Admiral Mead and tho mayor of Portsmouth. M. Wttte, tho chef of tho Russian plenipotentiaries, wns tho .first to sign his name to the treaty. After tho ceremonies of tho signing of the treaty Baron Do Rosen delivered a short speech, pointing out tho Importance Import-ance of tho event and the Influence It will have In tho relations between tho two countries. Ho onded by expressing ex-pressing tho satisfaction ho felt at tho good relations which havtj characterized character-ized tho work of tho plenipotentiaries. Baron Komura roplled, paraphrasing Baron Do Boson's Bpeech, and expressing ex-pressing his thanks for tho kind words addressed to himself and to the mombers of his mission. The entiro Russian mission, headed by M. Wltte, attended a thanksgiving service celebrated in Christ Episcopal church both by American and Russlnn clergymen. Re-entering, one of the chief members mem-bers of the Japanese mission Bald: "The treaty signed today inrr be the most Important historian! f'aturo of the twentieth century." |
