WM MMm "T$Mllshou Henry Hughes, one of Mendon's best and most favorably known citizens, and one of the country's coun-try's most sterling and aggressive characters since 1802, passed away at his home hi Mention last Friday evening, even-ing, aged "It j cars. Bishop Hughes was known thiough-out thiough-out this north country and his death will cause sincere regret in the hearts of many. While we have been unable to learn many of the particulars concerning con-cerning his death, wo aro led to believe be-lieve that the Bishop was hardly expecting ex-pecting the end to conic so soon, even though his friends might have expected ex-pected It. During his last few visits to Logan tho old gentleman has borne to The Rki'Uiilioan otllcc for a social chat and he Invariably expressed himself him-self as feeling exceptionally well and had the assurance of living a number of years. And yet today ho Is beyond recall. Friends have kindly furnished tho following sketch of his life: Patriarch Henry Hughes, born Dec. 25th 1825 at Mold, Wales; Joined tho Church July 2nd, 1851, was baptized by John Coproy. Ho left 'England to come to Utah on tho 28th day of Mch., 1853, In tho ship Falcon, arriving at New Orleans In tho latter part of May. He came up tho Mississippi river to Keokuk, fiom there by ox team In Appleton Harmon's company.arrlvlng In Salt Lake City on the 10th day of October, 1853. Shortly after this he moved to Big Cottonwood, working in tho Cottonwool canyons a good deal of the time until the tho third day of June, 1802, when ho moved to Men-don. Men-don. In tho year 1808 ho was ordained Bishop of Mention, holding that Important Im-portant position with honor for upwards up-wards of 32 years. He Ulled a mission to Wales In tho years 1874 and 1875! served a term in tho pen for keeping Hie law or God; was mayor of Mcndon City for two or three terms, was a member of tho convention convened for the purposo of bringing Utah Into tho Union as a state, and held many other honorable positions, all of which ho tilled with honor and Integrity. Mr. Hughes was ordained a Patriarch in lay, 1000. Ho was a kind husband, a loving father and a faithful Latter- JH day Saint. He leaves threo wives, ten MMM children, J27 grand children" and eight I MMM great grand chlldrpn to mourn his de- ; parturc.
