Wc havo all heard of temperance grocery stores, temperanco hotels, etc., but many people never heard of a temperanco lumbor yard. Yet for many years such an establishment ox- j lstcd at the corner ot Seventh and Carpcntor streets. Messrs. P.. L. and C. L. Nicholson conductod tho lumber business thero and had a large trade, but would never sell a foot of lumber to nny one connected with tho liquor business If they know It. On ono occasion oc-casion a builder, who Is still living, called thero, and, aftor buying a largo lot, went into tho offlco and planked down tbo monoy. As tho clerk wns about to hand him tho bill ho asked whero it was to be sent, and on being told that It was to bo delivered to a boor saloon nc South street, said at onco, "The sale Is off; we never sell goods to anyono connected with that business;" and all tho stalking the builder (who was and Is still a llfolong teetotaler) could do did not alter the decision. Ills money was politely handed back and ho was compolled to go olsowhoro for tho lumbor.
