Much thought has recently been given lo tho uso of oil as fuel, and It has Just been employed on tho British Brit-ish steamer Enterprise with satisfactory satisfac-tory results. A steel vessel, built at Nowcastlo-on-Tyno, tho Enterprise, has a carrying capacity of 1,000 tons. With coal as fuel her speed has nover oxcccdcd nn nvcrago of eight or nlno knots an hour, but sho has Just finished fin-ished a voyago of 2,000 miles from Hawaii to San Francisco, burning oil, and has succeeded in steaming an nverngo of ten knots nn hour. It was demonstrated that in substituting oil for coal tho ship mado a saving ot 40 por cent In tho weight of fuel nnd ot 3G per cent In tho space devoted to Its storage. Thero was also a slight saving In cos of fuel and operation of tho ship. |
