Tho census bureau has Issued a bulletin bul-letin of tho geographical distribution of tho population of tho United Stntes. It shows that almost 6C per cent of tho total population lives In the country coun-try drained by tho Atlantic ocean; over 53 per cent In that drained by tho Gulf of Mexico; 44 per cent in tho drnlnngo area of tho Mississippi river; almost 3 per cent ln tho area drained by tho great lakes; 4 per cent on the Pacific coast, half of ono per cent ln tho great basin. Tho proportion living within the region re-gion drained by tho Atlantic ocean Is steadily diminishing, while that part drained by tho Gulf of Mexico Is becoming be-coming relatively more populous, ns Is tho caso in a still more marked degreo In tho great bnsln and Pacific ocean region. Of tho foreign-born, 93 per cent livo in tho region drained to tho Atlantic ocean, 3G.I per cent ln tho region drained to the Gulf of Mexico, and 15 per cent In that drnined to tho great lakes. Tho proportion In tho region drained to tho Pacific ocean Is C.l per cent. Out of over1 1,000 negroes 998 nro found ln tho regions drained to the Atlantic At-lantic ocean, and C1.4 per cent are ln tho lands drnined to the Gulf of Mexico, Mex-ico, the proportion In tho west nnd on tho Pacific const being trifling. |
