Its throat Is adorned with smnll whlto feathers which, from their resemblance to clerical bands, havo gained for It tho namo "parson bird." Its metallic green plumage, with bronzo and purplish reflections. Is very beautiful. Its long and rather slender beak Is curved; It has rather largo feet, and tho length of Its tall is considerable - Although somewhat rarely seen In this country nllvo, this bird Is plentiful on both the north and south Islands of New Zealand; It Is a cood" songster and mimic, and Its lively temperament rendors It a most Interesting cago bird. Its food consists ot berries, Insects In-sects and honey. It has an extensile tonguo, tho tip of which Is forkod,ond, being covored with fibers, forms a kind ot brush, most useful to the parson par-son bird In gathering its food. |
