Show A NEEDED CHANGE. Isn't it time that the republican and democratic parties should cease nominating men for olllcc simply on th strength of their extensive family connections or because some Individ-' ual demands a Toward for "party ser-vlco?" ser-vlco?" Would It not be better If both parties par-ties would pay more attention to tho real merit of aspirants for olllcc, and select those best fitted for ofllcc? Why select for commissioner men notorious for their lack of system and consequent lack of success In their own business? Why select ward scrubs for members of the city council, and Ignoramuses as members of the Hoard of Education? Is It common sense or anything but a crime against society to select for treasurer a man who doesn't know a bank book from an almanac; or u man for assessor who Is not a man of strong character and with no experience In values;ora man for Sherill who hasn't the disposition to familiarize himself with and understand si considerable portion of law; or a man for a Hoard of Trustees or a Hoard of Education who knows nothing but horses, sheep, blacksmlthlng or the piano? Why select any man for public position posi-tion except he bo above reproach morally, mor-ally, thoroughly alert and capable mentally ment-ally with a good experience, or ability to adapt himself readily a man of known honor, Integrity and business probity? From among aspirants for onice.why select any other than those who seek the olllcc because of their honest belief that they can conduct the olllcc to better public advantage than any other? Why not demand of men their reasons rea-sons for wanting a particular otllcc, and If those reasons bo other than that they have well defined Ideas for the betterment of the conduct of that otllcc, why select them? Is "reward for party service" or "large family connection" to ever rule to the detriment of the city, county, state and nation? This has been the rule a long while, so why not try the other plan for a time? Is it beyond the possible? It Is NOT, If the public will but arouse Itself long enough to look about and note the necessity of the situation. |
