Show The Journal's Attitude. The Logan public should not be misled by the continual rant of the democratic organ about the proposed lire hall. The Journal is built considerably con-siderably on the Salt Lake Tribune plan; It has kicked, howldd and raved so long and often that It can not do anything else. It would bo sorry If all its desires were suddenly granted, for It would have nothing to howl about. However, it has nothing to rave about now, for all its noise about the council, "republican push," etc., preferring to shelter horses in a line building rather than give the children an education is nothing but buncombe That organ would like to create strife between the republican Hoard of Education and the republican council and It would like to convince the public that tho republican council is trying to bunco them bo It keeps up Its howl. The fact Is this for j cars there has been repeated effort to secure a lire and city hall and the necessity of a better equipped Hie department is generally recognized. The valuable property Interests In this city demand better protection against lire. Past effort to secure the desired improve meni have failed, but a few months ago It wasdcllnltcly determined that a new hall should be built and a better bet-ter equipment put in at the earliest date possible-the coming suit mer This very necessary Improvement can be made without any Increase of tax over last year and It was a matter of common consent on the part of the council that the lax should remain about the same. A few weeks ago the lloaid of Education Edu-cation anno.ioced that a new central building was needed, was inpciative in fact A MO.OOO or Uo.000 building would bo best, as the board saw it. However, theclt taxes arc practically as high as the law allows, and in order to get the desired building It would be necessary to bond or levy a live mills tax on consent of the people by election. The board conceived the Idea of asking the city council to cut it levy, thus giving tho opportunity for a larger school levy. The council did not sec it way clear to cut Its levy, and at a public meeting, to which all cltlcns were Invited, and which was attended by probibly l'io tax payers, a resolution was passed by a great ma'orky declaring that thoso present were agalnsl any additional tax levy for school purposes. Since that time the democratic organ or-gan has howled and raved, talking about the republican push," packed meetings, republicans not In favor of education, and It has finally rung In a great tirade on Flre-chlef Ucnson That publication has also raved about a $10,000 tiro hall, which It sajs couldn't put out a lire, talks about half the children running the streets, losing their eye-sight In bad rooms, and dying from disease contracted in Illy enlllaled rooms. It's stories have been long-vvlndcd, wild and woolly, and republicanism has been scored to a llnlsh. Republicans do not deny that a new central building would prove a great convenience at this time. It Is readily read-ily admitted that two rooms In the Woodruff arc not the most desliablc. It Is also conceded that there will bo a decided Increase In the number of new pupils next year, and that the two or thrco rooms needed for them arc not at hand. However, few see In this an Immediate demand fora$2.V 000 building. Thoy do not see In a failure to secure this building for another an-other year anything that will deprive any child of an education. For any overflow, rooms will be llttcd somewhere, some-where, and while not the most desirable, desir-able, the children and teachers of tills age can well stand for a year or even two jcars what children and teachers of other days had to stand always. If the Hoirdof Education has used all the moneys In other wajs, It docs not seem just ground for- asking the city to neglect Its other interests to supply a need that Is no more Imperative Impera-tive than the present one. As the lire hall matter Is presented tous.lt Is 'the Intention to erect a fairly good building of moderate size, and then equip the Are department so that It can make speed. It is expected ex-pected that the desired building can be secured for less than $10,000 The lcature of thlscontrovcisey Is tills tlio people, If they really want that school building tnls year as badly as the Democratic organ Insists, they can iret It. The fact that a (Ire hall Is to " huilt need not depriv -the children child-ren of a new building ir i ho people sense the need. The question Is do they want It badly enough to sacritlce something to get It? Tub Rkruiiu-can Rkruiiu-can would like to see that new building build-ing put up this year and Is willing to vote for the tax, but itdoes not feel like urging this extra tax on others. If the matter Is submitted to a vole and the people vote "yes," It will Indeed In-deed show their loyalty to school Interests. In-terests. If they vote "no" they can hardly be blamed under the circumstances. cir-cumstances. The average assessment Is $700. A 5 mill tax means JJ.50 additional ad-ditional tax for the year. The Democratic organ should get on the right side of itself once and say something cheerful. Itcould cultivate a sunny disposition to the advantage of Itself and the public. |
