Show Particulars of Drowning Dispatches Tell Just How it Comes That Mr. Riley Rainey Was Drowned. i j Mi;.san, Idaho, April .1 Albert I Ilalncj and son on Sunday morning attempted to cross the Snake river 1 north of Menan with a team of horses and canvas top spring wagon. The father fa-ther and the team were drowned but the son escaped. No trace of man, horses or wagon has yet been found tho a large party of searchers has pa-troled pa-troled the river on the banks and in boats all day, for several miles below the scene of the fatality Mr. Rair.cy was formerly a resident of Menan but has lived for several years at or near Piano on the north side of the river. The attempt to cross was made near Clarke's ferry. Though the boat was on the north side and at his service, for some unknown reason he chose to ford the stream. He is said to have crossed llrst, on a horse to try the dep:h of the water, and then made the attempt with the team and wagon. When in mitl stream they dropped Into a hole and both men went down. Hoth men swam for the shore, but the soli finding it too far, turned and caught the top of the wagon, and as It passed under the cable ca-ble upon which the ferry-boat runs, caught It and "cooned" his way to shore. When within a few feet of the bank, he saw his father sink In comparatively com-paratively shallow water, but before he could render assistance the body was carried away by the now swollen and Icy waters. Mr. Rainey was a man highly esteemed es-teemed bv all who knew him. He was of a daring and intrepid nature and has often forded this treacherous river when others thought it unsafe. Ho leaves a wife and several children. |
