Show Fay of the Army 853,815,345 a Vear. Paymaster-General Bates, in his annual an-nual report, says that the pay of the army for the year was $53,215,345, an increase over last year of $1,301,364. He makes several recommendations relative re-lative to pay accounts in the army, the most important being that officer of the pay corps no longer be compelled com-pelled to furnish bonds. He says that this should apnistsspecially to officers detailed for service under the new law, as they get no increased rank and are compelled to pay from $90 to 81S0 wheD so detailed. Most of the officers prefer commands in the line to such work. He says that the engineer officials handle and disburse dis-burse millions of dollars and are not required to give bond, and in only one or two instances has the governmen sustained any loss. ' |
