Show Oppose the j Purcliece. A meeting was held in -the county court house Monday evening to consider the purchase pur-chase of the Hercules street lines. About 3.) taxpayers were present, including all members of the city council. A number of speakers discussed the proposed pro-posed purchase, among them being be-ing Messrs. C. C. Goodwij, W W ajaaghan and C. Garff and others, all opposing ihe par-chase. par-chase. Figures were read showing that a new line could be put in for 12,0C0, or 3,000 less than the offer male for the Hercules. It was also shown that the -present line was in bad condition A standing vote was finally taken on the question, at which all present voted against the proposed pro-posed purchase and in favor of the building of a new line. C. 0. Goodwin was chairman of tae meeting and H. Buiien, Jr., secretary. Duiing the meeting Sir. Garff was asked to submit an itemized ! bill everything it will take to j complete the light plant, in-; in-; eluding the contracts already let jfor pipe line, water-wheel and j dynamo. This bill was read and ,8-iowSd a total of 553,560, notin-yudingthe notin-yudingthe 40 miles of distributing distribu-ting lines for this city. ,The question . was then asked the 'cxiBciiors who were present if there was acy item in ' the bill j that was not absolutely necessary neces-sary but no reply was given Mr. G Garff was asked the same qusstion and he answered in the negative. The question wa3 then asked the councilors by Judge Goodwin, Good-win, "if you pay the Hercules Co. $15,000 out of the $65,000. you have then left $50,000. Mr. G's bill shows it will take $53,550 to complete the pl?.nt and $1,000 Jp build tho oO uiiies of ciiy lines, making a total of $80,550; how are you going to raiae the balanee ofj the money?" but no answer was j given. Finally one of the . light j committee stated that they had 1 simply offered the $15,000 to get the Hercules Co. out of the way. In his epeech Mr.- Garff said the, council has a mechanical problem that none of them know anything about and the mayor refuses to employ em-ploy a superintendent that does, though councilmen have suggested that one be employed and he has refused. After the matter had been thoroughly thor-oughly discussed a motion was made by Mr. Wilson that it be the sense of this meeting that the Hercules Her-cules line3 be not bought at any price. This was seconded by Mr. Garff. The chair then asked that all who were in fayor of the moiion stand up. All but the councilmen and one more stood up. The negative vote was called and not one stood up. A motion was then made by Judge Goodwin that it be the sense of this meeting that the city council coun-cil do not buy the Hercules lines without first submitting to a vote of the people of Logan city.
