Show i ' ' ' ' " Preparing: Land for Beets. Tne Oxnard Brothers of Ncbrask11 have issued a circular to farmers on beeti culture-mm have the following to sav on how to prepare the seed bed. We give J it for the benefit of our farmers. j "Land that has been plowed must he harrowed ad soon as tho frost in out of the ground und the soil dry enough to prevent sticking. This work will level the ground thereby holding the moisture moist-ure in the aoil and increase the germination germi-nation ot tho weeds, etc. To secure a good crop it is necessary to kill all the weeds in tho ground b.jforo seeding. Ilsre is where the most failures occur', and if weeds are allowed to get a start the cultivation of the crop will involve much unnecessuiy and expensive hand worlj. Therefore to procure a good seed bad we advise working the soil 4 or 5 inches deep with a pulverizer, or better yet with a corn cultivator once lengthwise length-wise and dncc crosswise, making sure not to miss any spot in the field, as it is necessary to loosen any weeds that havo already sprouted. Then harrow lengthwise length-wise and crosswise to level the soil perfectly and finish killing tho weeds' After tiiis pack tho soil 2 to 3 inches with a heavy roller, never uso a plank Hoat, as floated ground is never well packed and will besido increase blowing and washing. The better the soil is packed after the weeds aro killed, tho better the seed will sprout. All the above work must be performed at the time when tho ground is in good working work-ing condition that is, not too damp, ah the working of wet soil must be strictly avoided. As beet seed requires considerable con-siderable moisture" to germinate, it would be a great loss to the beet grower to allow the soil during the preparation of the seed bed to dry out ; therefoie in 'l.te PJUiiyy ..average, season the field must bo prepared and seeded' Hie same day, this being tlm only way in which the moisturo can bo kept in the ground a good feature in crop raisiug and especially so in beet culture." |
