Perhaps we should mention men-tion that elimination of the horrid hor-rid DES added 15 to the cost of feeding a steer to market hence 15 added to your meat bill. But we're "protected." doctors, researchers, nutrition experts, consumer experts and many more speaking on nontoxic non-toxic therapies, diagnosis, nutrition nutri-tion and laws. Gilda Porter Owner and operator of Porter's Health Food Center Plaza, Cedar City Editor: Environmental groups are In the news again, demanding that our whole planning commission com-mission resign; demanding this, demanding that. We SHOULD be more concerned with our environment en-vironment than we have been In the past, but it is becoming obvious that thlj "protection" which our Environmental Protection Pro-tection Agency (EPA) and other oth-er envlromental groups want to give us Is as threatening to us as it would be to have no restraints re-straints at all. It seems they would prefer a pure environment environ-ment above all else - even If national bankruptcy is the price to be paid. We've been "protected" from the horross of DD8. So have the gypsy moths; they are now free to feast on the leaves of a million mil-lion acres of forest In the Northeastern North-eastern United States. Or were, until they stripped the trees clean. I could go on, but let me con- (Editor's Note: The follow-ing follow-ing letter written to Harry K. , Woodward, Water Resources Division of the State of Utah by Lloyd Gordon, Executive Director of ISSUE, Is herewith printed in the interest of our readers). Dear Mr. Woodward, The recent decision by Secretary Sec-retary of Interior Morton, and the Supreme Court decision on non degradation, makes it seem probable that the 102,000 acre feet of water assigned to the Kapalrowlts Plant will not be needed for that purpose. ISSUE ! hopes that that a-mount a-mount of water can be retained retain-ed for the development of clean, labor-intensive industry In southern Utah. Meanwhile, in order to obtain some reven- elude with my concern that we must reach a balance. Not necessarily nec-essarily a zero but a balance. By the 1980's EPA says our Industries In-dustries are to add zero pollution pollu-tion to our water supply. Estimated Esti-mated cost: one fourth of our total gross national product-the total market value of all the goods and services produced by this nation! After spending that much, I only hope we can legislate our fish, snails, beavers, etc. to do their part in our zero pollution effort. For example we "protect" the imenslty of the Alaskan frontier from a 40 ft. pipeline right-of-way but a 20 ft. one Is ok, after a fight costing fuel shortages and the millions of dollars. We protect liver lovers from dlethylstilbestrol (DES), which is a growth stimulant to beef steers not withstanding the fact that a womans body manufactures manufact-ures 1,000 times as much DES dally for normal body function! One would have to eat 1,000 lbs. Sincerely, LaMonte Pugmire, President, Iron County Farm Bureau Editor: While traveling east of Cedar City on Highway 14, about ten miles up the canyon road, I en-countered en-countered an incredible abuse of our natural beauty. There, by a lovely waterfall, the tumoff had been paved to better enable en-able the traveler to appreciate the refreshing beauty than can be offered; and Instead they have managed to garbage it up to the point of disgust. No longer is It an attractive asset, it is now a garbage dump. . . I did what I could, but I'm not equipped to haul It off. Who is responsible for this superfluous neglect? How can we allow this type of eyesore to discredit our canyon? It Is the responslbllty of us all . . . what are you going to do about it? Sincerely, Sharon Ronnow ue for the State from that water, wa-ter, we would like to forward a proposal to your department. At ia meeting called by the Colorado Plateau Environmental Environmen-tal Advisory Council in Flagstaff Flag-staff last year, we raised the question of whether or not it might be possible to lease water wa-ter to lower basin states, l.e. California. A gentleman who was introduced as a leading legal authority on the Colorado River Pact opined that it might indeed be possible. If it is possible to lease these 102,000 acre feet for a definaW-time definaW-time period say 5 or 10 years, it might be possible to come up with the type of Industrial In-dustrial development most suitable for this area. Just in passing, we would like to note that this organization organiza-tion Is sponsoring an agri-business near Page, Ariz., which would employ 500 persons, re-quire re-quire only about 500 acre feet annually, and which would require no energy other than the waste heat from the Navajo Nava-jo Plant. It is Just this type of development which we feel is Ideal, and we hope that as we generate new Ideas for In-dustry In-dustry of this type, water will be available. Sincerely, Lloyd Gordon Editors In view of the extensive criticism against the County Commissioners and the County Road Supervisor concerning the condition of County roads, I personally feel that it is totally unjust. |
