Show Valley sawmill gets 'Warm' reception The regular meeting of the iron County Planning Commission was "warmer" than usual Wednesday night, thanks to discussion concerning a planned sawmill in the Cottonwood area of the valley. Following discussion on the project,, the commission gave their approval of the project, stating zoning of the parcel under question allows such a venture. The land, on north Bulldog Road, is presently zoned agriculture, which defines the processing of agricultural products as an appropriate use of the land. Homeowners in the area, however, stated the zoning regulation "does not reflect the times in Iron County today. It is outdated," Phil Carter, , one resident protesting the commission's decision said. A coalition of homeowners will visit the county commission meeting Wednesday, March 13, to make a formal protest, he added. Carter said the sawmill will depreciate . land values as well as present a safety hazard. Children, he said, will be enticed by the sawmill and surrounding woodpiles which will risk their safety when they play in the area. Petitions, he said, are being circulated cir-culated concerning the matter. Darrell Stratton, who proposed and presented the sawmill construction, said he was forced to the location due to runway expansion at Cedar Municipal Airport. He also said he plans no fur- ther expansion of the sawmill nor would he sell to an owner planning expansion. He said the light industry would be operated only in evenings and on weekends. |
