Show Cedar City All-Stars Win Colt League Area Title. Enter Western Tourney The Cedar City Colt League All-Star team has won the District Dis-trict tournament conducted this past week in Spanish Fork and will now advance to the Regional Region-al level of tournament play to compete with district winers from throughout the Western United States. The Cedar City crew lost thei' opening game of the Distric' tournament to Brigham City bv a score of 4 to 0 but came back with four successive victories to win the double-elimination tour nament. After dropping the opener to Brigham City the Cedar City crew came back in the second rounc' to defeat Boise, Idaho by a score of 5 to 0. then tangled again with Brigham Citv and defeated them by a score of 17 to 3. That left Cedar City with one los and Spanish Fork-Springville with no losses and the only remaining re-maining teams. They were slated slat-ed to play the final round Saturday Sat-urday but rain cancelled the contests. con-tests. That resulted in the Cedar team returning home over the week end and returning to Spanish Fork Monday to complete com-plete the tournament. In the opening game Cedar City came up with a 5 to 4 victory vic-tory to give both teams a single 'oss in the tournament and forced forc-ed a second game. In the final came Cedar Citv took a lead and ield it for a final 8 to 5 victor: At the conclusion of the torn .lament Wynn Isom of Ceoar Crty was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and re vived a trophy for his efforts. Isom saw action on the mound during the tournament and at first base as well. In the opening game Isom was on the mound but lost in spite of pitcning a three hitter. Errors hampered Cedar City efforts and fhey were also limited to only-four only-four hits, all singles. In the second round Gary Gul-liford Gul-liford was called on to handle the pitching asignment and he gave up just four hits in pacing the team to a 5 to 0 shutout victory, vic-tory, over Boise, Idaho. Cedar !City got the scoring started in I the third inning c? piay Dale Hatch got aboard when he was hit with a pitched ball and came into score on a triple by Boh Smith, Smith then scored on a single by Greg McMullin. Smith also doubled in the fourth name and Gary Whitney came up with an extra base hit, a double in the fifth. The loss for Boise eliminated them from the tournament. They had lost to SfanUh Fork-Springville. Brigham City, who had lost in the second round of play, also to Spanish Fork-Springville was the next victim for the Ce dar City crew as they were elim-inafed elim-inafed on a one sided, abbreviated abbreviat-ed five inning affair. Bob Smith I was on the mound for three ln-I ln-I nings and left with a 17 to 1 lead. Wade Roberts came on to i finish out the game. Cedar City Jumped on tie starting pitcher with Hatch singling to start the top half of the first inning. They pushed in two runs that frame to take the lead, a lead they never nev-er relinquished. The Cedar crew had their problems in the double victory. They committed 10 errors over the two games Monday, but came up with the plays and hits when j they needed them to hold off the ' host crew. This week the crew will be I busy preparing for the regional event slated for next week. The i team expects to arrive in Provo for the event, Tuesday, Aug. 3 to I participate in a steak fry and the , tournament action will open up on Wednesday, Aug. 4 Provo as : host and Cedar City will represent repre-sent the Intermountain area, and two teams, one from California and one from Hawaii are expected expect-ed to make up the other participants partici-pants in the event. |
