Show Hite Bridge and Road Assured by $3 Million Appropriation Long awaited road to Southeastern South-eastern Utah by way of Hite is now possible due to $3 million Federal appropriation for construction con-struction of three bridges and approaches. ap-proaches. C. Taylor Burton, Director of Utah State Department of Highways, High-ways, said this allotment by the U. S. Bureau of Public Roads assures as-sures action for 1963 on Utah Highway 95. With an additional $1 million promised for 1965, the 19 miles of new construction will be completed. State matching funds are not required due to public land appropriation for this area. This includes the bridges over the Dirty Devil or Fremont River, the Colorado and the White Canyon, some 10 miles above the present site of Hite where the antique ferry is now in operation. Costs for road construction con-struction in this rugged country run very high per mile. The State Highway Department Is already making preliminary surveys and necessary structural designs to push the project to completion before the waters of Laku Powell interfere with the bridge footings. This development will be of, great benefit to the touring public, pub-lic, as well as the Counties of Southern Utah, being the only Colorado crossing between Moab and Glen Canyon Dam; and will open up access to the Canyon Lands National Park. It is 85 miles to Highway 47 at Blanding, and about 50 miles to a connection at Hanksvllle and the Capital Reef National Monument on Highway 24. |
