Show : ; k I i i DEFICIENCIES IN PLANT CARE J SCS Specialist Addresses County Groups Although in not so many words, ranchers and livestock men of Iron County wri told In two special meeting Monday that over grazing Is the cause of range depreciation throughout the Western States. The meetings, sponsored by the Iron County Soil Conservation Conserva-tion District, were held in Parowan Paro-wan and Cedar City. Appearing before the two groups was Waldo Frandson, range specialist for Western States and the territories territor-ies of Hawaii and Alaska for the Soil Conservation Service. Frandson titled his remarks, "soil, water and plant conserva-tion," conserva-tion," with emphasis on plants. He advocated that the rancher and livestock man has not J' learned to feed plants as care- a fully as he feeds his livestock. He stated that "grass harvesting and grass feeding "is the se- " cret of range management." Too many livestock men take V the attitude that as long as a - - plant is green above the ground it's forage to be used, that oth- yw erwlse would be wasted. j The specialist attempted to j show that the leaf is the secret ' to the growth of the plant. Food manufactured in the leaf Is re- turned to the root to be stored j for next year's growth. Without i-4f the leaf the plant cannot repro: i duce Itself. ' r- "It has developed into a race between the growth of the plant ' and feed for the livestock. Un- ' fortunately the plant has lost In most Instances." he said. - On a typical range Frandson explained a four pasture system that has proved o Improve the . efficiency of foliage as much as 30 to 40. The system utilizes the plan of harvesting and rest for. plant Ufe. By over-i 7ii.g the rancher is losing the .eaf, the manufacturer manufac-turer of life for the plant. By destroying de-stroying the manufacturer of food, range depletion has become be-come a simple case of plant starvation, star-vation, he said. |
